Oriental Blue & Platinum Kintsugi Sea Globe

£245.00
Sold

Dimensions: H: 10cms D: 10cms

Clay: Fine bone china

Technique: Slip cast

Glaze: Oriental blue, cobalt aventurine, platinum, gold

Sculptural / Functional

This beautiful fine bone china Sea Globe has been finished with a beautiful bright oriental blue glaze that intentionally crazes during the firing process. Accents of deep cobalt and aventurine cascade down the globe that has platinum detailing applied to the rim during the final firing.

Made as a pair, the other finished with a gold rim, during the final firing both globes created cracks that resulted in the pieces breaking up. It is one of the first fine bone china Sea Globe I have repaired using this technique, mainly because usually if they break they tend to shatter. The result of the repair has created a stunning gold highlight against the deep oriental blue and contrasting platinum rim.

The piece has been finished with platinum detailing on the rim and gold leaf highlighting the repairs in the style of Kintsugi on the external parts of the globe, whilst internally the damage is visible without being highlighted.

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as Kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.

PLEASE NOTE: This piece is a globe that has cracked during firing and intentionally repaired using the style of Kintsugi highlighting the repairs in gold leaf.
